Backcountry Alaska Rescue K-9, or BARK-9, is a search team dedicated to training dogs to find lost people. It is comprised of volunteers who train their own dogs to search. The training process is very time consuming and can take up to several years! Dogs and handlers respond to searches throughout the state of Alaska when requested by Alaska State Troopers.
Search dogs can be used in wilderness, urban, avalanche, disaster (rubble), and even water searches. Some dogs are also trained to find cadaver (human remains) scent, which can be helpful when helping search for a long-deceased person. Every dog and handler must meet strict standards of performance to become certified for field work.
